A major addition to the workshop is a Tormach PCNC 1100 milling machine. The process of installing and bringing up the machine has involved extensive infrastructure improvements for power, compressed air, even “heavy lifting” equipment to manage the machine and it’s accessories.
On top of that is the very satisfying task of learning about numerical-controlled machining. It’s almost entirely new to me, and beyond digesting a mountain of information there’s the challenge of mastering a powerful system without having it destroy itself or me in the process. It’s like a malevolent genie that will do exactly what you wish for; an ill-considered request will be ruthlessly executed with disastrous effect. So you proceed slowly, cautiously, and develop a healthy respect for the tool.
The fly cutter is useful for “facing,” or applying a mirror-like surface to a workpiece. This one uses a carbide insert as the cutter. The brass fitting was added to show the finish of a single pass on aluminum.
